Cat and woolen ball
Getting an image like this one isn’t an easy task. Great white sharks, much like a cat and a wooden ball, but in this case a tuna head, can be particularly playful. Some individuals are more motivated than others, once again indicating personality traits between individuals of this species. The movement of the tuna head by the bait handler can make a big difference in the way the shark reacts to it. If the tuna is pulled too fast, the sharks often get a fright and swim away. If pulled at the right speed, it gets the shark to stay on the surface, slowly following it. The surface swim gets the shark’s dorsal fin out of the water: a great identification feature for researchers studying their population dynamics.
