Sunset shot – Never give up
A beautiful breach at sunset in Gaansbaai, with the light house in the background. Capturing this image was not an easy feat. We spent three hours wondering the bay with our seal decoy to try and get this image: Michael Rutzen driving the boat over all the best spots and Sara Andreotti holding the camera steadily pointed at the decoy. Great white sharks are particular when it comes to breaching. Typically, this behaviour only take place in the early morning and late evenings. Furthermore, the conditions need to be perfect, good visibility is a must. Breaching occurs when a shark launches itself out of the water completely, usually to capture prey. However, there are other theories about this behaviour, that have been linked to communication, parasite off-loading and the attempt to avoid other, larger predators. This is the only breaching photo captured that day, a once off after more than 3 hours of wait. Ultimately, the message here is to never give up.
