What is Spy-hopping?
Curious Great white sharks who are inquisitive and curious about what is going on above the surface of the water and surroundings, lift their heads above the water, tilting their eye. This behaviour has been defined as ‘spy-hopping’ in the scientific literature and can be seen exhibited by orcas and some whales species but, rarely in other shark species. Spy-hopping has been linked to hunting behaviour and used as a tool for curiosity and investigation. This individual was particularly relaxed and displayed a ‘player’ behaviour, as it approached slowly and playfully, particularly curious about a red jacket that was worn by an individual on the research vessel. Great white sharks have different personalities, and it is fascinating to meet the ones that are so calm and inquisitive.
