Ampullae of Lorenzini
An inquisitive Great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) showing off his ampullae of Lorenzini. Ampullae of Lorenzini are small pores in the skin around the head and the underside of sharks, skates and rays. These organs are electroreceptors, which detect and are sensitive to electrical impulses generated by muscles contractions by potential prey. They also detect the earth electromagnetic field, which enables homing and migration. The ampullae of Lorenzini are an important shark feature, used by the Shark Safe Barrier technology.
