The SharkSafe BarrierTM is the only eco-friendly alternative to anti-sharks nets that have been scientifically tested on highly motivated sharks (e.g by means of attracting the sharks through the barrier using fish-based baits and chum). The different tests spanning from 2011 to 2016 have been published in the following peer reviewed articles:
- Highly motivated white sharks can be excluded from an area by the SharkSafe BarrierTM:
O’Connell C.P., S. Andreotti, M. Rutzen, M. Meӱer, C.A. Matthee 2017. Testing the exclusion capabilities and durability of the Sharksafe Barrier to determine its viability as an eco-friendly alternative to current shark culling methodologies. Aquatic Conserv: Mar Freshw Ecosyst. 2017;0:1–7. https://doi.org/10.1002/aqc.2803
- White sharks can be deterred by strong barium ferrite magnets and a visual barrier:
O’Connell, C. P., S. Andreotti, M. Rutzen, M. Meÿer, and P. He. 2012. The use of permanent magnets to reduce elasmobranch encounter with a simulated beach net. 2. The great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias). Ocean & Coastal Management 97:20–28.
- Bull sharks can be deterred by strong barium ferrite magnets:

- Highly motivated white sharks don’t swim through the SharkSafe BarrierTM

- Highly motivated bull sharks can be excluded from an area by the SharkSafe BarrierTM

SharkSafe Barrier Sponsors and Partners
It is our mission for the SharkSafe BarrierTM to be deployed worldwide in all areas currently facing the threat of shark attacks.
We hope to see our innovation moving the world into a greener direction.
SharkSafe Barrier Bottom-up Movement
We realized that local governments are very reluctant to invest public funds on new technologies, no matter how tested they are, so we decided to make our mission everyone’s mission.
We realized that this is no longer a work that can be achieved by a handful of passionate scientists and conservationists, and it must become a global plea to stop the unjustifiable cull of marine life by shark nets and drumlines.
